COLUMBUS, Ohio – A three-run fifth inning lead the Gray squad led to a 6-3 victory in the second game of the Scarlet and Gray World Series Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium. The win evened the series 1-1.

With the scored tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Gray bats came alive for three hits. Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) reached after no one covered first base on his bunt that split the pitcher and first baseman. He moved to second on a single through the left side by Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) before moving to third on a fly out by Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). Zoeller remained a first until he stole second, putting runners at the corners for Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South). Bourquin singled through the left side to drive in both Angle and Zoeller, giving the gray a two-run advantage. Bourquin stole second, tagged on a fly out by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and then scored on a fielding error for the final 6-3 score.

Angle finished 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Fryer was 2-for-3 and scored once. Bourquin provided two runs with his single in the fifth. Gray out-hit the Scarlet 8-7, though the Scarlet had just two hits in the final four innings of play. The teams combined for five errors. . Gray jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom first inning when Caravati sacrificed himself with a fly out to right field to score Angle, who had led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Michael Arp (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) extended the Gray lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a two-run home run over the fence in left field. Fryer also scored on the long ball after leading off the inning with a single to right-center field.

Scarlet tied the game in the top of the third inning with aid from four straight hits. Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) delivered a one-out hit to left to get things started. He moved to third on a hit-and-run by Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) through the right side. Kennedy knocked in both runners with a single down the right field line before reaching second on an attempted putout at the plate. Kennedy went to third on a single to center field by Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland). Kennedy scored when Angle, the centerfielder, dropped the ball.

Gray starting pitcher Matthew Selhorst (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles) got the win, going five innings. He allowed all three runs on five hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) came on in the sixth to pitch the final two innings and pick up the save after limiting the Scarlet to two hits. Scarlet reliever Dan McCauly (Fr., Fremont, Ind./Fremont) got the loss, allowing the final three runs by the Gray. He relieved starter Justin Myers (Jr., Scottown, Ohio/Symmes Valley) in the fifth.

The teams continue the best-of-five intra-squad series Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Game four of the series will be Thursday at 3 p.m., while game five, if necessary, will be played Friday at 3 p.m.
