COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State defense earned the privilege of wearing the Scarlet-colored jerseys in practices by outscoring the Buckeye offense 69-68 in cold and windy conditions Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
The offense was in Scarlet to start the day Saturday but will now switch to Gray for upcoming practices, rushed for 230 yards as four quarterbacks combined to complete 35 of 71 passes for 259 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Senior Troy Smith completed six passes for 46 yards and a score while classmate Justin Zwick found his target 10 times on 15 attempts for 48 yards. Sophomore Todd Boeckman completed 9-of-19 tosses for 88 yards while freshman Rob Schoenhoft attempted 25 passes with 10 completions for 77 yards and a score.
Four running backs carried the ball at least 10 times with freshman Chris Wells leading the way with 94 yards on 19 carries. Sophomore Erik Haw rushed for 93 yards on 14 rushes with a touchdown run of 71 yards, the longest play from scrimmage on the day.
Sophomore Maurice Wells gained 44 yards on 12 carries while freshman Joe Gantz carried 10 times for 24 yards.
Eight receivers made catches of 10 or more yards with a total of 18 players making at least one catch. Freshman Brian Hartline led the offensive with five catches for 62 yards. Junior Anthony Gonzalez (from Smith) and freshman Dan Potokar (from Schoenhoft) each made touchdown grabs during the scrimmage. Maurice Wells, sophomore Brian Robiskie and junior Marcel Frost each made three catches.
The Buckeye kickers attempted eight field goals, making five. Sophomore Ryan Pretorius made one of 47 yards while freshman Aaron Pettrey made three of four, including kicks of 41 and 42 yards. Junior Andrew Good also connected on a 32-yarder.
In the end, the defense won out by forcing several turnovers, including an interception by freshman linebacker Ross Homan.
Ohio State concludes the spring season with the annual Spring Game at 1 p.m. April 22 at Ohio Stadium.
