COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gray bats sprayed 14 hits in an 8-3 win over Scarlet in Game 5 to claim the 2018 Scarlet & Gray World series title Thursday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Led by quality control coordinator Kirby Pellant, the Gray squad finished with a 3-2 record over Scarlet in a highly-competitive fall intersquad series. The annual fall series concludes fall ball for the Buckeyes.
At the dish, freshman Marcus Ernst went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and RBI. Junior Dominic Canzone, senior Kobie Foppe, junior Brent Todys and junior Noah West each had a pair of hits in the contest for Gray too. Foppe and West each drove in two runs. Brady Cherry drove in a run on a pair of hits for Scarlet. On the mound for Gray, freshman right-hander Garrett Burhenn struck out four in two innings of work. Junior left-hander Andrew Magno fanned two in two innings, while freshman right-hander Bayden Root had one strikeout in one scoreless inning. Junior right-hander Joe Gahm finished off the win with four strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief. Highlighting for Scarlet, redshirt freshman left-hander Seth Lonsway had three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched, while freshman left-hander Mitch Milheim fanned two over 1.1 innings and senior right-hander reliever Brady Cherry fanned one in 1.1 innings.
