Abby Fesl, a member of the 2016 women’s volleyball team and recent Master’s degree graduate in early August, is tracking down the program’s newcomers in a feature series titled Gettin’ Gabby With Abby. This edition highlights Hannah Gruensfelder.

As two weeks of two-a-days in the grueling St. John Arena heat come to a close, the Buckeyes prepare to fly to Brigham Young University for their first three preseason matches of the year.

“I am pumped about the matches this weekend because we have such a strong group of girls and we’re ready to show everyone else what we can do,” freshman Hannah Gruensfelder said.

This weekend will be the Weldon Spring, Missouri native’s first time competing as a Buckeye. Prior to last Saturday’s Scarlet and Gray Scrimmage, Gruensfelder and the Buckeyes fine-tuned their skills in preseason training.

“Preseason went really well, especially because I can feel myself improving with the coaches’ constant help, and the tactics I’m learning. My volleyball IQ is definitely increasing.”

Along with hours spent in the gym, the Ohio State squad participated in an annual retreat.

“My favorite part [of preseason] was the retreat because we did so many fun activities and I got to know the girls outside of a volleyball setting,” the five-foot-six defensive specialist explained. For two days, the players spend time developing deeper relationships with one another and completing team building activities such as kayaking or canoeing.

“My favorite part of Ohio State, so far, has been the people, the extended family, and that everyone here is obsessed with being a Buckeye.”

Gruensfelder plans on pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering with the goal of working in the field of artificial tissue building. One day, she wants to work with the Army to provide medical supplies or with children in a hospital.

“I want to make a big impact.”

Prior to Ohio State, Gruensfelder was an AAU All-American, a three-time Junior Nationals Open qualifier with St. Louis CYC and Rockford Thunder and a four-year starting libero and record holder at St. Joseph Academy.

Gruensfelder’s parents, Donn and Cindy, and three siblings, Jacob, Joshua and Sarah will be among the fans in Columbus, Ohio this fall.
