Abby Fesl, a member of the 2016 women’s volleyball team and recent Master’s degree graduate in early August, is tracking down the program’s newcomers in a feature series titled Gettin’ Gabby With Abby. This edition focuses on freshman Lauren Witte.
“High competition is so fun to me,” Lauren Witte, a six-foot-two freshman, said. She will find just that in the Big Ten Conference as she joins the 2017 Buckeye squad.
Witte and junior transfer Jasmine Koonts join returning sophomore Madison Smeathers in the middle blocker position. “It’s really intense in the gym. We hold each other to a high standard,” Witte said.
The Mentor, Ohio native has been around Ohio State for years as she grew up a Buckeye fan. Now on campus, representing the Scarlet and Gray, she looks forward to home matches, especially learning the traditions and routines of game day. “It’ll be really fun to play in front of a home crowd and my family will be at a lot of games.” Witte’s parents, Mike and Cathy Witte, sister Megan, and brothers, Jack and Connor, will be in attendance at St. John Arena this fall.
The Lake Catholic alum had a taste of playing in front of a large crowd in Columbus while competing in the Under Armour All-American game during ‘Final Four’ weekend last year in Nationwide Arena. Witte played alongside fellow OSU freshman Ayanna Swan. “I really liked that it was in Columbus, near campus. I met people who will be playing in the Big Ten this year, which made me excited for the season.”
During the summer, being on campus helped Witte get oriented to campus and the workload of classes. She will be pursuing a degree in Health in Rehab Sciences in the fall, with plans to become a Physician Assistant for cardiovascular or orthopedic patients’. Witte has the drive to pursue this degree after she had enjoyed shadowing a physician assistant during her senior year.
Witte will be wearing number 12 while she competes for the Buckeyes.
