COLUMBUS, Ohio – When the Ohio State Department of Athletics held its 51st annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner, senior Becca Gavin received multiple honors for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Gavin was the recipient of the Pierce Phoenix Award, which is given to a student-athlete who has excelled in academics, athletics and personal growth attained through perseverance and hard work. The award is to be used to attend graduate or professional school at Ohio State, with preference given to someone who intends to enroll in the Fisher College of Business. In December, Gavin learned that she was accepted into the Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
The Gahanna, Ohio native was also one of five Buckeyes selected for the Woody and Anne Hayes Scholarship Fund. The award, established in 1979, provides one or more varsity athletes with financial assistance to postgraduate studies. The recipients of this scholarship are student-athletes who have demonstrated academic achievement (3.00 GPA minimum) and leadership qualities.
“To receive any postgraduate scholarship award is a tremendous honor and I felt nothing short of humbled to receive both the awards,” Gavin said. “I’m sincerely grateful for the opportunities that donors and their families provide for student-athletes at Ohio State. I’m thankful for the impact they’ll have in my life as I begin dental school in the fall.”
