Buckeyes and Gauchos to meet at 1 p.m. Sunday in Sweet 16’
COLUMBUS, Ohio The fifth-seeded Ohio State men’s soccer team will host 12th-seeded and defending national champion UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. Sunday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in an NCAA Championship third-round match, the NCAA announced Thursday.
The Buckeyes are 14-3-5 and are coming off a 1-0 home win Wednesday over Louisville in the second round of the tournament. The Gauchos are 13-3-4 and eliminated Washington 1-0 Wednesday in Santa Barbara.
Ohio State and UC Santa Barbara have never met on the soccer field.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Big Ten champion Buckeyes are riding a school-record 12-game unbeaten streak (9-0-3) and have allowed only three goals in those 12 games. They are 6-1-1 at home in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this season and 50-20-11 there since the facility opened in 1999. That record includes a 6-3-0 mark in postseason games including Big Ten and NCAA championship games.
A LOOK AT UC SANTA BARBARA
Big West Conference champion UC Santa Barbara is 7-0-1 in its last eight games and is 5-2-1 on the road this season. The Gauchos are 14-4-0 in NCAA championship play since 2002 and have been to two College Cups during that span falling to Indiana in the 2004 title match and winning it all last season.
The winner of the Ohio State vs. UC Santa Barbara match Sunday will advance to a home quarterfinal, or Elite Eight,’ game Dec. 7, 8 or 9 against either No. 13 seed Maryland or unseeded Bradley, which knocked off No. 4 seed Indiana in a penalty shootout Wednesday.
