COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a breakout freshman season for Ohio State, Gabriella De Santis was named the 2014 ITA Rookie Player of the Year for the Midwest Region, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Tuesday. De Santis, who also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolades, is the first in program history to receive the award from the ITA.
In singles, De Santis led the squad with a team-high nine wins vs. conference opponents, finishing with a 21-12 overall record, including 13 wins on court one this spring. The Caracas, Venezuela, native notched a team-high 27 doubles wins, ending the campaign on a 14-match winning streak with doubles partner Sandy Niehaus. The pair finished the season with a 19-2 record, including a perfect 7-0 ledger in B1G matches. De Santis was a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection and earned B1G Athlete of the Week honors April 1. She is currently ranked 81st in the nation in singles and had four wins over ranked players during the season.
Ohio State wrapped up the 2014 campaign with 19 wins, the most second-most wins in program history, and participated in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010. The Buckeyes, currently ranked 35th, finished third in the B1G standings en route to an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
