COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s hockey senior goalie Christian Frey has been named Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. Frey, from Arlington, Texas, earns his second consecutive weekly B1G award after leading the Big Ten in goals-against average and save percentage last week.
In the Buckeyes’ 1-0-1 series vs. Arizona State, Frey posted a 1.44 goals-against average and .953 save percentage, allowing just three goals (none at even strength). Friday he had 35 saves, including 16 in the second period and 12 in the third, and allowed just one power play goal. Saturday he had 26 stops in 65 minutes between the pipes, allowing a power play and an extra attacker goal.
This is the eighth time in his career Frey has been recognized as a Big Ten Star of the Week. On the year, he has a 2.61 goals-against average and .917 save percentage with a 5-2-2 record.
Frey and the No. 11-ranked Buckeyes travel to No. 1/2-ranked Penn State for two games this weekend. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.
