COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team have been selected for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will run Wednesday-Sunday at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Palm Desert, Calif. Freshman Shiori Fukuda will compete in the 64-player singles draw and will team with classmate Maria Tyrina in the 32-team doubles tournament. Seniors Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed also earned a berth into the doubles tournament.
This is the inaugural year of the event, which replaces the ITA National Indoor Championships that were held in New York each fall. Players qualified for the tournament through designated placings at earlier ITA National Championships and the ITA Regional Championships.
Live scoring will be available for all matches, with live video available from two courts at the Indiana Wells Tennis Garden.
Fukuda, the runner-up at the ITA Midwest Regional, will open play at 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday vs. Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt. One round of singles will be held both Wednesday and Thursday, with the Round of 16 and quarterfinals Friday, semifinals Saturday and final Sunday.
Both Buckeye doubles teams reached the semifinals at the ITA Midwest Regional. Fukuda and Tyrina will take on No. 7-seed Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones of Georgia Tech in the first round of doubles at 5:45 p.m. ET Wednesday. Sneed and Sanford will take the court at 5:30 p.m. ET Wednesday against Sabina Machalova and Natalie Suk of Ole Miss. One round of doubles is slated for each day through Sunday.
Ballinger and Hurley Head to Arizona
Friday through Sunday, junior Andrea Ballinger and freshman Mary Beth Hurley will compete in the ASU Thunderbird, hosted by Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
The tournaments this week close out the Buckeyes’ fall schedule.
The Buckeyes will next hit the courts Jan. 19-21 at the Miami Fall Invite in Miami, Fla. The first dual matches in Columbus will be Jan. 26-27 when Ohio State hosts ITA Kickoff Weekend matches. The Buckeyes will face Kansas in the first round, with Arkansas taking on Wake Forest. The winners and losers will meet on day two, with the site winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis.
Schaub to Represent U.S. in Master’U BNP Paribas International Collegiate Team Competition
Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, has been named to the coaching staff for the Master’U BNP Paribas International Collegiate Team Competition for the second year in a row. The annual event will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in Marcq-en-Baroeul, France.
Schaub and Boise State men’s coach Greg Patton will lead the United States squad as it competes against teams from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Russia. Last year, with Schaub on staff and Buckeye Francesca Di Lorenzo competing, the U.S. won its sixth straight Master’U title. The U.S. has claimed seven of the last eight championships. Each team match consists of two men’s and two women’s singles matches, one women’s and one men’s doubles match and a mixed doubles match.
Schaub was the 2017 ITA National Coach of the Year and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. She has led the Buckeyes to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a semifinal berth in 2017. The team won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles in 2016 and ’17.
