Top teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States compete in Vancouver
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Buckeyes are on the top international teams in women’s hockey are gathered in Vancouver, British Columbia, to compete for the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup beginning Monday and concluding with the gold medal game Sunday, Sept. 6.
Three of the Buckeyes are former Ohio State defensemen – Tessa Bonhomme on Team Canada, Lisa Chesson on Team USA and Emma Laaksonen on Team Finland. Incoming freshman forward Minttu Tuominen also is on Team Finland.
The tournament is taking place at Vancouver’s General Motors Place, which will be the site of the playoff games for women’s hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The Hockey Canada Cup is being used as a test event for the Games.
The United States opens the tournament against Finland at 6 p.m. (ET) Monday, followed by Canada vs. Sweden at 10:30 p.m. Hockey Canada’s site (www.hockeycanada.ca) will have live-streaming webcasts of all games, except the gold medal game, available for a fee.
TSN, Hockey Canada’s official broadcaster, will televise the gold medal game of the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup Sept. 6. It will be shown on tape delay at 9 p.m. PT/midnight ET.
