Paul Haynes, safeties coach
On the team
“We have a lot of young guys that are making some solid impressions. Eugene Clifford and Nate Oliver have both really stepped up and they are going hard everyday. This is what spring ball is all about the guys getting reps and playing hard.”

On the safeties
“We are helping them and teaching more it is not about just being physical because we know they can do that now we are working on getting them to the point where they have a higher football I.Q.”

On Eugene Clifford
“He has moved from corner to safety for us and has done a great job. We decided at the start of spring ball that we need more depth at the safety position and he (Eugene) played it in high school so it was an easy move for him.”

Taver Johnson, cornerbacks coach
On spring practice
“At this point we are just starting to see what the guys can do. Andre Amos has really been great for us coming back from the injury he had. He is going to make an impact for us come fall.”

On Malcolm Jenkins
“Last year I was happy when we moved him to safety for nickel situations because it was what was best for the team. It also gave Chimdi (Chekwa) a chance to get on the field and develop.”

On the safeties and corners
“Coach (Paul) Haynes and I have a great relationship as do all the coaches on the staff. It makes it easier for guys to move back and forth between our meetings. We joke a lot and he is a great guy.”

Malcolm Jenkins, senior defensive back
On the team
“I would say that I’m the leader and that Donald Washington has really become a leader on the field. He is a great vocal guy and is not afraid to get in guys’ faces. We share the leadership role.”

On spring practice
“This spring we are really working on fine-tuning our knowledge of the game. This spring we have mixed things up a bit in order to raise our overall football I.Q. One thing that we have done is watched some offensive line film and leaned some blocking schemes and that has help me.”

Anderson Russell, junior safety
On the spring
“We are all working together to become more of a unit. One things have we have to do is increase our turnovers. Last season I remember everyone of the four interceptions I dropped and I know I need to fix that. “

On the defense
“Our goal is the same as it is every year and that is to be the No. 1 defense in the country. The only way we are going to accomplish that goal is by getting more turnovers. As a unit we missed about 14 interceptions last year and that is not going to cut it.”

Kurt Coleman, junior safety
On spring practices
“Things are going very well. We have had some really good practices and are looking really good. We are working hard and moving quick and getting excited for the upcoming season.”

On the younger players on defense
“Cameron Heyward and Thaddeus Gibson are looking really good. Chimdi Chekwa is really stepping up and Jamario O’Neal is getting better and better. We have a lot of new faces on the team and everyone is looking really good.”

Donald Washington, junior cornerback
On the younger players
“Everyone is doing a great job during practice and working really hard. Chimdi Chekwa is doing a great job and having a good spring season. We have a couple of young guys with a year under their belts that are really stepping up to the challenge.”
