COLUMBUS, Ohio–John Cooper, Ohio State head football coach, announced today four Ohio State players were elected captain for the 2000 season.

Seniors Ken-Yon Rambo (Cerritos, Calif./Long Beach Poly), Rodney Bailey (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) and Joe Cooper (Columbus, Ohio/Independence) along with junior Steve Bellisari (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) were elected captains following a team vote Thursday morning.

“These are four outstanding team leaders,” Coach Cooper said. “They have provided outstanding leadership during the spring and fall. I expect they will be tremendous captains for our team this year.”

Rambo (6-1, 160) is regarded as one of the fastest receivers in the Big Ten. An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 1999, Rambo caught 41 passes for 833 yards as a junior. He ranked fourth in the Big Ten in receiving yards per game (69.4) and all-purpose yards per game (128.3).

Bailey (6-3, 270) will anchor the Buckeye defensive line this season from his left end position. He has made 22 starts during his career, including six last season. He recorded 23 tackles as a junior, including 17 solos.

Cooper (6-0, 225) increased his playing time dramatically as the season wore on in 1999 at the outside linebacker spot. He recorded 36 tackles, 22 solos, in 12 contests, including a season-high eight stops against Illinois.

Bellisari (6-3, 220) will enter the season as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes in his junior campaign. He threw for 1,616 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore with a season-high output of 243 passing yards against Ohio University. He was the first sophomore to start at quarterback since Joe Germaine in 1996.

Bellisari is the first junior captain since Thomas “Pepper” Johnson in 1984 and the first junior captain in the John Cooper era.
