COLUMBUS, OHIO – Fifth-ranked Ohio State (21-3 overall, 13-1 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) won the outright MIVA Championship Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 (15-7, 15-11, 15-7) victory over No. 10 Lewis (19-10, 8-5) to end regular season league play. It marked OSU’s third consecutive won or shared championship and sixth in the last eight years. Five Buckeye players reached double-figure kills in the match with Chris Fash (Jr., Lockport, Ill.) scoring a team-high 23. Pieter Olree (So., Reading, Pa.) added 18, Jose Rivera (Sr., Waukegan, lll.) 13, Rene’ Esteves (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) 11 and Colin McMillan (Sr., Burlington, Wis.) 10 in a match that had OSU hitting .428 as a team to the Flyer’s .296. Grant Bindon (Jr., Auckland, New Zealand) of Lewis had a match-high 26 kills for the Flyers with Eduardo Quinones (Sr., Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Jorge Alifonso (Jr., Dorado, Puerto Rico) adding 12 each.

Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie in game one with a kill by Angel Aja (Sr., Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and a Flyer error to take a 3-1 lead. A Quinones Kill cut the OSU lead to 3-2 but a block by Fash and McMillan made it 4-2. A Flyer block by Bryan Johnwick (Sr., Lisle, Ill.) and Bindon cut the OSU lead to 4-3. An Olree kill and a Lewis error made it 6-3 OSU. A block by Johnwick and Edgardo Deniz (Sr. Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) cut the OSU lead to 6-4. A kill by Olree and a block by Aja and McMillan and a kill by Aja gave OSU a 9-4 lead. A Bindon kill made it 9-5 and two OSU errors cut the Buckeye lead to 9-7. Ohio State took an 11-7 lead on a kill by Olree and a block by McMillan and Olree. A Fash kill made it 12-7. A block by Esteves and Rivera put the lead at 13-7. A Rivera kill set game point at 14-7 and a Flyer error ended the game at 15-7. Ohio State hit .520 for the game to .362 for Lewis. Fash and McMillan had seven kills each for OSU with Olree adding six for the game. Bindon had nine kills for Lewis with Quinones adding eight. Lewis had a 1-0 lead in game two off a Bindon kill. A Flyer error tied the game at one and another error put OSU up 2-1. Lewis tied the game at two on an Alifonso kill and two OSU errors gave the Flyers a 4-2 lead. A block by Olree and Esteves cut the lead to 4-3 and a Rivera kill tied the game at four. OSU went ahead 5-4 on a Rivera ace but an OSU error tied the game at five. Another OSU error put Lewis ahead 6-5 but a block by McMillan, Rivera and Fash tied the game at six. A Fash kill gave OSU a 7-6 lead. An ace serve by McMillan and a block by Esteves and Fash put the Buckeyes up 9-6. Lewis closed the margin to 9-7 on a block by Bindon and Johnwick. Two Olree kills and a solo block by McMillan have OSU a 12-7 lead. A Buckeye error made it 12-8. A kill by Quinones and an OSU error made the score 12-10. Lewis closed to within one on a kill by Alifonso at 12-11. An Esteves kill put OSU up two at 13-11. A block by McMillan and Aja set game point at 14-11. A Fash kill ended the game at 15-11. Ohio State hit .377 for the game to .318 for Lewis. OSU’s Fash had eight kills in the game along with seven for Olree. Bindon had 13 for the Flyers in the second game.

Ohio State opened a 4-0 lead in game three on two kills by Olree, a Rivera kill and a solo block by Esteves. An Alifonso kill put Lewis on the scoreboard at 4-1. A backrow dig/kill by Ross McLain (Sr., Lebanon, Ohio) and a Fash kill expanded the lead to 6-1. A block by Alifonso and Bindon made it 6-2. A Fash kill and four Flyer errors put Ohio State up 11-2. Two OSU errors closed the Buckeye lead to 11-4. An Olree kill made it 12-4. Two OSU errors and a block by Johnwick and Deniz closed the margin to 12-7. A Flyer error gave OSU a 13-7 lead. The Buckeyes reached game/match point, 14-7, on a block by Olree and Hill. A Flyer error closed out the game at 15-7. Ohio State hit .371 for the game to .205 for Lewis. OSU’s Fash had eight kills in the game with Olree adding five. Flyer Alifonso had six kills with Bindon and Johnwick adding four each.

Ohio State hit .428 for the match to .296 for Lewis. The Buckeyes had an 83-65 margin in kills. Setter Aja collected 70 of his team’s 73 assists while Deniz had 53 of the 63 Flyer assists. OSU had a 14.5 to seven advantage in blocks with Esteves having a match-high seven (2-5) and McMillan six (1-5). Flyer Johnwick had a team-high six assist blocks. The Buckeyes had a 35-26 edge in digs with McLain recording a match-high nine for OSU and Deniz and Alifonso, eight each for the Flyers. OSU collected the only two aces of the match, served by Rivera and McMillan.

Ohio State, the top seed in the MIVA Tournament, will face Clarke College (8-18, 0-14), the No. 8 seed, next Saturday at 2 p.m. in quarterfinal action in St. John Arena.
