COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (1-0 overall, 0-0 in the Big Ten) opened its 2000 season with a 2-1 win over Miami (Ohio). The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead and never looked back. OSU freshman Vanessa Immordino (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored the games first goal with 2:46 remaining in the first half to give OSU a lead it would never relinquish.
“It’s always nice to start the season with a win,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “I think we got our first-game jitters out of the way. We had a lot of our young players in there – with two of our freshman scoring our goals, which was nice to see.”
Eight minutes into the second half, freshman Mariana Solorzano (Caracas, Venezuela/Humboldt School) scored to give OSU its second goal of the afternoon. With 6:10 remaining in the game, Miami attempted to mount a rally with a goal by Cheryl Iozzi but the OSU defense stiffened the remainder of the game.
Tomorrow, OSU will play host to Southwestern Missouri State, noon, at the Turf Field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
