COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (4-3; 0-1 Big Ten) suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 17 Penn State (5-5; 1-0 Big Ten) Saturday at North Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio. The game marked the first Big Ten contest of the season for both teams. Sophomore Lauren Kruse notched the Buckeyes lone goal and her third of the season.
In the first half both teams forced turnovers causing the game to become a back and forth affair. Penn State put the first goal on the scoreboard as forward Shaun Banta stole the ball in the middle of the pitch for a breakaway score at the 9:17 mark. Banta recorded PSU’s second goal of the game at 26:58 when she fired the ball into the back of the net from the left side of the goal post. The Nittany Lions led 2-0 at the break.
In the second stanza OSU’s Kruse (So., Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills), with the assist from Florencia Stier (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Washington), pulled the Buckeyes within one goal as she pushed the ball through a cluster of Nittany Lions at the 55:08 mark. Ohio State was unable to even up the score, as PSU’s midfielder Michele Rigby netted a goal off of a penalty corner awarded at 65:19, taking a 3-1 lead.
Ohio State goalie Lindsay Williams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) compiled eight saves to Penn State’s Megan Akstin’s zero. OSU registered five shots, while PSU had 20. The Buckeyes garnered four penalty corners to the Nittany Lions’ 10.
The Buckeyes return to action when they travel to Louisville, Ky., to face the Louisville Cardinals at 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at Trager Stadium.
