The Ohio State field hockey team (8-7; 1-4 Big Ten) suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 9 Michigan (13-5; 4-1 Big Ten) Saturday at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wolverines are the fifth Top 20 opponent the Buckeyes have faced and are set to conclude their two-game weekend against the California Golden Bears at 1 p.m. Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Much of the first 35 minutes of action was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to get the ball into the net. It was not until the 29:49 mark that Michigan’s Jessica Blake scored the lone goal of the contest. Blake, with Katie Morris on the assist, redirected the ball to the inside left post to record the eventual gamewinner. OSU registered one shot and one penalty corner to Michigan’s five and two, respectively.
The second half played out similarly to the first stanza. Both teams were on the defensive attack and Michigan ultimately was able to hold off Ohio State, recording the 1-0 win. OSU notched two shots and UM had six. The Buckeyes and the Wolverines were statistically even in penalty corners, as they both had two.
Buckeye goalie, Lindsay Williams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) compiled four saves on the afternoon, while UM goalkeepers Molly Maloney and Beth Riley recorded zero, splitting time in the net.
Ohio State tallied a total of three shots and three penalty corners compared to Michigan’s 11 shots and four penalty corners.
