COLUMBUS, Ohio-Carey Fagan, a native of North Canton, Ohio, has been added to the women’s gymnastics coaching staff, head coach Larry Cox announced Tuesday. Fagan will begin her coaching duties immediately.
Fagan replaces Nina Dent who spent seven seasons as an assistant for the Buckeyes and now is working for the Ohio State College of Education.
“Carey brings a lot of positive energy to the gym,” Cox said. “That really works out well with how we run practices. She has an outstanding gymnastics background and has a lot to offer our kids. We’re very excited to have Carey on our staff.”
A 1994 graduate of Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio, Fagan graduated from Penn State University in 1998 with a double major in media studies and speech communications and was a four-year member of the gymnastics team.
While at Penn State, Fagan was a three-year letterwinner, serving as captain her senior year in 1998. She was the recipient of the “Penn State Pride” award in 1996 and 1998 for outstanding team leadership and also was a member of the “Spirit of the Lion” Academic/Athletic Honor Society in 1998 for excellence in the classroom and in the gym.
Fagan was a member of the NCAA Northeast regional championship team from 1995-1998 and competed at the NCAA championships in 1995, 96 and 98. In high school, she was a member of the 1993 Region Five Level 9 National Team and was a U.S. Championship qualifier in 1991.
Fagan, 26, comes to Ohio State from Albuquerque, N.M., where she resided since 1999. There she was an assistant coach at Westside Gymnastics, serving as the Level 5/6 head beam coach and also instructed competitive level gymnastics. She began her coaching career as a graduate intern at Penn State in 1999 where she helped with daily office activities and summer camps. Fagan also worked full-time with CB Richard Ellis in Albuquerque as a marketing specialist from 2001-02.
