COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thanks to her three-point weekend in Bemidji, Emma Maltais has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, powered by GoodWood Hockey, conference officials announced on Tuesday.
Maltais once again stepped up for the Buckeyes, playing a large role in the team getting four out of the six points in the series at Bemidji State. Her first point of the weekend came from notching an assist on the game-tying goal in Friday’s 3-3 game. She did most of her damage on Saturday though, scoring the first goal of the day for the Buckeyes and assisting on the fourth goal. The rookie also blocked two shots and finished with a +2 rating for the weekend.
The native of Burlington, Ontario leads the WCHA in points-per-game with 1.21, while her 17 points tie her for second in the conference. Her points and 10 assists tie her for first in the WCHA among freshmen. She leads the in both points and assists, while her seven goals are tied for third on the team.
This is not the first time Maltais has earned WCHA honors this season. She received the Offensive Player of the Week award for her four-point weekend at Minnesota in October. Maltais also earned the Rookie of the Week once before this season for her three-point weekend at St. Cloud later in October. Her stellar opening month of the season led to her being voted the WCHA Rookie of the Month for October.
The No. 5 Buckeyes hit the road for a top-10 clash with No. 9 Robert Morris this weekend. Puck drop for the series opener gets underway at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday.
