COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State (13-1, 4-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team, behind a team-high 23.5 points from Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) defeated sixth-ranked IPFW (9-3, 4-3), 3-1 (27-30, 30-23, 30-27, 30-22) Saturday night in St. John Arena to complete the two-match sweep of the Mastodons. Meske had a team-high 19 kills (.457), two ace serves a solo block and three assist blocks in the contest. OSU’s John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) contributed a match-high 11 total blocks (one solo, 10 assists) to equal his career high. IPFW’s C. J. Macias had a match-high 26 points with 23 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks.

Game one saw 13 ties leading to a 24-24 score. Two OSU errors gave IPFW a 26-24 lead. At 27-25, two Buckeye errors set game point at 29-25. A Meske kill and a Mastodon error stopped two game points at 29-27. IPFW, with a block by Graydon Ainsworth and Jason Yhost ended the game at 30-27. The Mastodons hit .167 for the game to .086 for the Buckeyes.

After six ties in game two, Ohio State broke an 11-11 tie with a Meske kill and a Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) ace serve to lead 13-11. An IPFW kill by Macias cut the lead to one at 18-17. The Buckeyes, with a kill and ace serve from Stevens and a Mastodon error opened up a 21-17 lead. Leading, 24-20, a Meske kill, a Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ace serve and an IPFW error expanded the Ohio State lead to seven at 27-20. The Mastodons responded with a Macias kill and a Josh Collins ace serve to make it 27-22. Back-to-back kills by Meske set game point at 29-22. A Buckeye error stopped the first game point at 29-23. The Buckeyes, on their second game point attempt, won the game with an Albertson kill at 30-23 and tied the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .531 for the game to .292 for IFPW.

IPFW opened game three with a block by Josh Stewart and Colin Lundeen and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. At 6-3, IFPW, an Albertson kill, a Klein-Albertson block and two ace serves by Stevens gave Ohio State a 7-6 lead. A Lundeen kill tied the game at seven. After 13 ties, the score was 26-all. Ohio State with a kill and an ace serve by Meske and a solo block by Albertson reached game point at 29-26. The Mastodons stopped the first game point with a Stewart kill at 29-27. A Mastodon service error ended the game at 30-27 Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .290 for the game to .278 for IPFW.

With the score tied at three in game four, two IPFW errors, a Stevens-Albertson block and an Albertson kill made it 7-3, OSU. A Collins kill, an OSU error and a Macias ace serve cut the lead to one at 7-6. An IPFW error, kills from Meske and Stevens and a Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) -Albertson block give Ohio State an 11-6 lead. Ohio State held the lead the rest of the game, reaching match point at 29-21 with a Mathews-Albertson block. A Macias kill stopped the first match point at 29-22. A Mastodon service error ended the game at 30-22, to give Ohio State a 3-1 win in the match. The Buckeyes hit .207 for the game to .027 for the Mastodons.

For the match, Ohio State hit .276 to .181 for IPFW. The Buckeyes had a 60-54 advantage in kills and edged the Mastodons, nine to seven, in ace serves. OSU’s Stevens posted a match-high four aces in the match. The Mastodons gave up 18 service errors to 15 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, IPFW held a 31-29 margin in digs with IPFW’s Lundeen and Matt Pliske sharing match-high honors with seven each. At the net, Ohio State had a 16.5 to 11.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson had a match-high 11 blocks with a solo and 10 assists. At setter Mathews recorded 55 assists for Ohio State and Lundeen had 48 for IPFW.

With Ohio State’s victory over IFPW and Saturday’s Ball State (8-6, 3-1) loss at home to Loyola-Chicago (12-3, 4-2), 3-1 (36-34, 30-32, 30-23, 31-29), the Buckeyes are now in first place in the MIVA. Ohio State will take to the road next week for non-conference matches at Rutgers-Newark Friday at 7 p.m. and at George Mason Sunday at 2 p.m.
