COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State (12-1, 3-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team remained undefeated in the MIVA with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-27) win over Lewis (10-4, 4-4) Friday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) scored a match-high 18.5 points in the victory with John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) adding 14 and Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.), 13.5. Meske recorded 17 kills (.556), an ace serve and an assist block in the match. Albertson (.692) and Stevens (.389) each had 11 kills in the contest with Albertson adding six assist blocks and Stevens, a solo block and three assists. Jared Dayton posted a team-high 17 points for Lewis with Drew Pickering adding 12.5 and David Kelnhofer, 10. Dayton recorded 16 kills (.370) and a solo block while Pickering had 10 kills (.238), two ace serves and an assist block. Kelnhofer contributed eight kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks.

Lewis broke a 1-1 game one tie with a kill from Billy Sahagian and two from Dayton for a 4-1 lead. Leading 6-4, a kill and ace serve from Kelnhofer gave Lewis a four point lead at 8-4. At 13-10, the Buckeyes, with kills from Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), Meske and Albertson tied the game at 13. After seven ties and the score at 20-all, two Flyer errors and an OSU block by Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) and Albertson gave the Buckeyes a 23-20 lead. Lewis would cut the lead to two, four times, but at 26-24, kills from Meske and Stevens made it 28-24, OSU. Lewis cut the lead to 28-26 with a kill from Kelnhofer and a Alex Vigansky-Pickering block. A Flyer error made it 29-26 with OSU serving game point. An Ohio State error and a Vigansky solo block stopped two game point to make it 29-28. The Buckeyes ended the game with a kill from Meske for a 30-28 win. Ohio State hit .615 for the game to .382 for Lewis.

Tied at five in game two, Lewis used a Pickering ace serve and a Vigansky-David Taylor block to take a 7-5 lead. At 11-9, Lewis, a kill from Stevens and a Flyer error tied the game at 11. Two Albertson-Stevens’ blocks and a Meske kill gave Ohio State a 14-11 lead. After a Pickering kill (14-12), a Lewis error, two blocks from Albertson and Mathews and a Meske ace serve gave the Buckeyes an 18-12 lead. Ohio State reached game point on a Flyer error at 29-24. A Dayton kill stopped the game point at 29-25. Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ended the game with a kill for a 30-25 Buckeye win and a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .385 for the game to .154 for Lewis.

Lewis with an OSU error and a Kelnhofer kill broke a 1-1 tie to lead game three, 3-1. After a Klein kill (3-2), a Pickering kill and an OSU error gave Lewis a 5-2 lead. The Flyers held a 13-11 lead when Ohio State score four points to take a 15-13 lead. The run began with a Flyer error. Kills from Meske and Albertson and a solo block by Meske completed the run. An OSU error made it 15-14. Buckeye kills from Meske and Stevens made it 17-14. At 19-17, OSU, Flyer kills from Sahagian and Kelnhofer tied the game at 19. At 21-all, OSU kills from Albertson and Stevens gave the Buckeyes a 23-21 lead. Lewis responded with a Craig Boller kill and a Taylor-Boller block to tie the game at 23. Two Flyer errors and a kill from Stevens opened a 26-23 Buckeye lead. Lewis cut the lead to 26-24 with a Boller kill. OSU scored the next three points with kills from Albertson, Ted Schoenfeldt (Fr., Northbrook, Ill.) and Klein to set match point at 29-24. The Flyers stopped two match points with a Taylor ace serve and a Kelnhofer-Sahagian block to set the score at 29-26. Ohio State won the game with a Meske kill at 30-26 to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .410 for the game to .267 for Lewis.

Ohio State hit .462 for the match to .278 for Lewis. The Buckeyes had a 55-45 advantage in kills while Lewis had a four-to-two margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 18 service errors to 12 for the Flyers. Defensively, Ohio State had a 19-17 edge in digs with OSU’s Meske and Klein and Flyer Pickering each recording seven. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10-to-seven advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson collected a match-high six assist blocks. At setter, OSU’s Mathews had a match-high 49 assists, while Taylor had 38 for Lewis.

Ohio State continues conference play Saturday night when they host sixth-ranked IPFW at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
