COLUMBUS Ohio-The No. 6 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team will send seven student-athletes to the 2010 Winter Cup Challenge held Thursday and Saturday at the Las Vegas Sports Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The Buckeyes will be competing for a spot on the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Senior National Team.
Head coach Miles Avery, will lead the group comprised of senior Tai Lee, juniors Sean Regan and Brandon Wynn, sophomores Ty Echard, Philip Onorato and Steven Spencer. Former Buckeye Jake Bateman (2006-09) also will be competing. Senior Shachar Tal will be competing on special entry for Israel.
The athletes are divided into three sessions of approximately 43 competitors in each for preliminary competition. The Buckeyes will be competing in Session 3, starting at 7:45 p.m. PST. The Top 42 athletes will qualify for final competition according to the Men’s Program Committee (MPC) approved points system. Event finals will be held Saturday beginning at 7:15 p.m. PST.
The Senior National team will be selected based on the 10 highest ranking gymnasts along with five participants chosen by the MPC. Senior team members will be a part of the team until the 2010 Visa Championships.
2009 Winter Cup Performance
Last year the Buckeyes had four athletes advance to finals of the 2009 Winter Cup Challenge. Jake Bateman finished 14th, while Brandon Wynn and Philip Onorato placed 26th and 28th, respectively. Steven Spencer advanced to finals on pommel horse but could not repeat his performance from preliminaries where he scored a 14.75.
Recap from Illinois
Last week, the Buckeyes fell to then No. 1 Illinois, 341.350-349.700, leading Brandon Wynn posted three Top 3 finishes during the meet. The team swept vault with Philip Onorato leading the team on the event with a 16.050 followed closely by Wynn in second with a 16.000. Wynn, the only Buckeye to compete in the all-around, placed third.
