Eight Buckeyes Named CGA All-America Scholar Athletes

Columbus, Ohio – Eight Ohio State men’s gymnasts – Jake Dastrup, Andrew Rickly, David Szarvas, Joey Bonanno, Michael Chan, Alex Wilson, Evan Bluemel and Jake Martin – were named 2017 College Gymnastics Association (CGA) All-America Scholar-Athletes on Thursday.

Dastrup, Rickly, Szarvas, Bonanno and Chan all earned First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. Athletes named to the first team had to attain a 3.50 grade point average or higher. Dastrup (pommel horse), Szarvas (pommel horse) and Bonanno (floor) all earned CGA All-America honors for their performances at the NCAA Championships helping Ohio State to a second-place finish.

Ohio State’s Second Team All-America Scholar-Athletes were Bluemel, Martin and Wilson. Martin, a fifth-year senior, was also named the Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and played an influential role in Ohio State’s second straight conference title in 2017.

Martin leads the way for the Scarlet and Gray with four career All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. Bluemel and Rickly are three-time recipients, Dastrup and Bonanno are two-time honorees, and Szarvas, Chan and Wilson earned the accolades for the first time in their careers.

All in all, a total of 151 athletes were named CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes.
