COLUMBUS, Ohio – Katya Duvall provided the pitching. Emily Clark and Taylor White took care of the offense. The result was a 5-0 victory for Team Scarlet over Team Gray on Friday evening on the eve of the 16th annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic.
THE SHORT STORY
Duvall tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out six, and Clark belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to highlight an eight-hit attack. Taylor White added a pair of doubles and freshman Amy Balich reached base in three of her five at-bats (two hits, one walk).
HOW THE RUNS WERE SCORED
After playing two scoreless innings, White led off the top of the third with a double to left center. She’d eventually move to third on a groundout to second by Alex Vargas and then came home on a wild pitch that made the score 1-0. Team Gray starter Shelby Hursh was able to put an end to the threat when she got Bailee Sturgeon to fly out to left field.
Team Scarlet stranded one runner in the bottom of the third, but in the top of the fourth White hit her second double of the game – this one a shot to right center field – and then Clark followed with a towering home run to straightaway center field that made the score 3-0. Morgan Ray then came in to relive Hursh and recorded the final two outs of the inning – a strikeout of Vargas and a groundout by Sturgeon.
In the top of the sixth, Team Scarlet loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to a Balich single, Sturgeon double and Bri Betschel bunt single. Ray was nearly successful in working out of the jam, getting two straight fielder’s choice outs at home. A two-out error, however, allowed a pair of runs to score for the games final 5-0 margin.
DUVALL IN CONTROL
Duvall, who went 4-0 in her freshman season, gave up just three hits – all singles – and allowed one base runner over the final three innings. On the other side, three pitchers saw action for Team Scarlet – Hursh (3.1 IP, one strikeout), Ray (2.2 IP, two stirkeouts) and Shelby McCombs (1.0 IP).

Emily Clark: 1-5, two-run HR
