COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore men’s gymnast DJ Bucher won the national parallel bars title Friday at the 2005 Visa Championships at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. In addition, Bucher (Mason, Ohio) placed fourth on pommel horse and was seventh on rings. Buckeyes Randy Monahan and Ronald Ferris also competed at the event, with Monahan recording two Top 6 finishes.
The scores from the finals Friday were combined with scores from the prelims Wednesday for the final results.
Bucher, the 2005 Big Ten parallel bars champion, won the event title with a combined score of 18.425. Bucher had a 9.2 on the first day and then scored a 9.225 in the finals. He was the only gymnast to post over a 9.0 in both sessions and had two of the four scores of over 9.0 in the two days combined.
On pommel horse, Bucher placed fourth with a total of 17.5, posting an 8.85 during the finals. On rings, he combined for a 17.4, with an 8.625 in the finals, to place seventh.
Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.), who completed his eligibility in 2005 with a conference rings title, was sixth on rings with a total of 18.10. After a 9.125 on the event Wednesday, Monahan posted an 8.975 in the finals. On high bar, he was sixth, scoring an 18.125, with a 9.1 on day two. Monahan placed 13th on floor with a total of 18.7, including an 8.05 in the finals.
Ferris (Sr., Austintown, Ohio) was 11th on pommel horse, scoring an 8.35 in the finals for a total of 16.4. On high bar, Ferris placed 13th, scoring 17.025 (including 8.675 in the finals).
