COLUMBUS, Ohio Approximately 90 divers from 24 schools, including all six Ohio State divers, will compete Friday through Sunday this week (March 14-16) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion as part of the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships. Admission is free each day.

Ohio State is hosting one of five zone meets taking place this weekend around the country with divers at each meet vying for the chance to compete at their respective 2008 NCAA championships. The 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 20-22 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The 2008 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 27-29 at Federal Way, Wash.

The order of events for the NCAA Zone C competition is as follows:

  • Friday at 1 p.m. Women’s 1-Meter / Men’s 3-Meter (simultaneous)
  • Saturday at 1 p.m. Men’s 1-Meter / Women’s 3-Meter (simultaneous)
  • Sunday at 11 a.m. Men’s Platform / 30 minute break / Women’s Platform

Doors for the general public will be open approximately 90 minutes before the start of each session.

Event Results
Live results for 2008 NCAA Zone C Diving championships will be available through www.divemeets.com. Results will be emailed after each session to those media and SIDs wishing to be included on the list. To be included on email distribution lists, please send email contact info to Kendra Lee at lee.3147@osu.edu.

Credentials
All Media members and SIDs interested in covering the event should submit credential requests via e-mail to Kendra Lee at lee.3147@osu.edu.

Credential Pick-Up
Media credentials may be picked up on the days of the event. All credentials may be picked up at the front desk located at the north end of the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Parking
Parking passes will not be issued to Media or SIDs. Parking is available at an hourly rate in the Neil Avenue Parking Garage just south of the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and the Tuttle Park Place Parking Garage north of the facility.

The Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion
Considered one of the finest competition pools and diving wells in the nation, the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion’s new technology provides a venue for some of the fastest times and best diving in the country. In fact, the July 2007 issue of Aquatics International magazine stated this about McCorkle: “a state-of-the-art competition pool loaded with the latest technology sets a university apart from the competition.”

Dedicated October 14, 2005, the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is the newest addition to Ohio State’s top-notch athletic facilities. The Pavilion consists of the Mike Peppe Natatorium and the Ron O’Brien Diving Well. Holding nearly 1.56 million gallons of water in the entire facility, the Pavilion is part of Ohio State’s new Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC). The McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion has already has hosted numerous championship competitions and is scheduled to host more. Here’s the championship slate to date:

Ohio State Diving Coach Vince Panzano
Vince Panzano is coach of the powerful Ohio State men’s and women’s diving teams. Panzano was named the 2007 Big Ten Men’s Diving Coach of the Year and has a total of nine Big Ten Coach of the Year honors (three for the women and six for the men). He has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, ten NCAA champions, 15 NCAA runners-up, 48 Big Ten champions and 70 NCAA All-Americans.

Buckeye Divers are in the Zone
All six Buckeye men’s and women’s divers have qualified for the NCAA Zone C diving championships Here is a quick look at each of the competitors and their 2007-08 season accomplishments:

Bianca Alvarez
Fr., Miami, Fla.

2007-08 (Freshman Season) Named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after finishing second on the 3-meter board during the 2008 Big Ten Championships … earned a third-place finish on the 1-meter in the conference championships … finished first on the 1-meter and second on the 3-meter at the Ohio State Invitational … named Big Ten Diver of the week on two separate occasions … set a new school and McCorkle Aquatic Center record with a 396.15-point performance off the 3-meter against Wright State … led the team with four regular season victories on the 3-meter … finished with three top finishes on the 1-meter.

Kristin Asman
Fr., Columbus, Ohio

2007-08 (Freshman Season) Named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after capturing second place on the platform event at the 2008 Big Ten Championships … finished sixth on the 1-meter and seventh on the 3-meter during the championships … earned a fifth-place finish on the 3-meter and platform at the Ohio State Invitational … finished the regular season with eight top 5 finishes on the 3-meter and six on the 1-meter.

Chelsea Davis
Jr., Columbus, Ohio

Ohio State Career: 2007-08 (Junior Season) Earned a fourth-place finish on the 1-meter springboard at the 2008 Big Ten Championships … captured first on the 3-meter and third on the 1-meter at the Ohio State Invitational … earned two Big Ten Diver of the Week awards … broke Northwestern’s Norris Aquatic Center record with a score of 318.53 on the 1-meter … finished with a team-high four first place finishes on the 1-meter … posted three regular season wins on the 3-meter … combined for seven regular season wins on both the 1-meter and 3-meter … as a freshman competing for Northwestern University, Chelsea won the Big Ten championship on the 3-meter springboard event.

Ryan Jefferson
So., Madison, Wis.

2007-08 (Sophomore Season) Captured first on the 3-meter against Wright State and Eastern Michigan/Michigan State … finished in the Top 3 six times on the 1-meter … earned a second-place finish three times on the 1-meter … took fifth on the 1-meter at the Big Ten Championships.

Sean Moore
Fr., Englewood, Colo.

2007-08 (Freshman Season) Named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after his second-place finish on the platform at the conference championships … earned sixth on the 1-meter and eighth on the 3-meter at the championships … named Big Ten Diver of the Week on November 28 … finished the regular season with five top finishes on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards … captured a second-place finish on the platform at the Ohio State Invitational.

Wes Wieser
Jr., Chesterfield, Mo.

2007-08 (Junior Season) Named All-Big Ten First Team after capturing Big Ten platform title for the second consecutive season … finished second on the 1-meter and seventh on the 3-meter at the Big Ten Championships … earned four wins on the 1-meter and one on the three-meter during the regular season … named Big Ten Diver of the Week twice … competed in all three diving events at the 2007 NCAA Championships … finished 26th, 14th and ninth on the 1-, 3- and 10-meter, respectively, at the meet.
