CLEVELAND, Ohio – Myles Martin participated in the feature bout of Saturday’s NWCA All-Star Classic at the Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University, taking on two-time defending national champion Gabe Dean of Cornell at 184 lbs.
Dean built a 5-0 lead after two periods and then tacked on eight points in the final two minutes to pull away for a 13-4 major decision. It was Martin’s first match at 184 lbs. after winning the national championship last season at 174 lbs.
The Dean/Martin bout was the lone match of the night that featured the nation’s top two ranked wrestlers. Dean, 34-1 last year, has won 78 of his last 81 matches. Martin made history in 2015-16 when he became just the 15th true freshman in NCAA history – and first at Ohio State – to win a national title as a true freshman.
Over the course of the NWCA All-Star Classic, Ohio State has been represented 21 times. Buckeye wrestlers have gone a combined 10-10. The first Ohio State wrestler to compete in the event was current Notre Dame College head coach Frank Romano, who wrestled at 118 pounds in 1970.
Martin and the rest of his Buckeye teammate return to the mat next Sunday, Nov. 13, at the ASICS/Journeymen Classic in Troy, N.Y. on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
