COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior center Jessica Davenport was named Big Ten player of the week in an announcement made by the league office Monday. The native of Columbus, Ohio finished her final regular season with the Buckeyes with five weekly awards and now has 14 for her career.
Davenport led the Buckeyes to their third consecutive Big Ten title with 26- and 25-point performances against Penn State Thursday and at Michigan Sunday. Davenport’s 26-point game helped Ohio State clinch a share for the Big Ten title against the Lady Lions. She also led all players with eight rebounds and four assists. Sunday, Davenport posted double-double No. 46 of her career as she added 15 rebounds and turned away a pair of Michigan shot attempts.
For the week, Davenport averaged 25.5 points on 17-of-30 (.567) shooting. She also posted 11.5 rebounds per contest.
The 14 career Big Ten player of the week awards ranks second all-time behind the 17 of Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante (2001-04).
Davenport and the Buckeyes head to the Big Ten tournament this weekend. Ohio State, the No. 1 seed in the postseason tourney for the third year in a row, faces the winner of No. 8 Iowa and No. 9 Indiana at 6 p.m. Friday in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
