COLUMBUS, Ohio– A quartet of Buckeyes were selected to compete at the 2014 Under-23 World Rowing Championships. Senior Ashley Bauer, junior Aina Cid Centelles, sophomore Elodie Ravera-Scarramozzino and junior Daphne Socha will row for their respective countries in Varese, Italy, Wednesday-Sunday. Bauer will represent the U.S. National Team in the women’s quadruple sculls. Rowing for her home country of Spain, Centelles will race in the women’s pair. Ravera-Scarramozzino and Socha will compete in the women’s four and pair, respectively.
During the 2014 season, Bauer, Centelles and Ravera-Scarramizzino were part of the Buckeye First Varsity Eight and the crew was pivotal in helping Ohio State earn its second-consecutive NCAA team championship. This past season, the 1V8 posted an undefeated record for the first time in program boat history (12-0). Not only did the First Varsity Eight capture its second-consecutive Big Ten title, but the group made history once again by winning Ohio State’s first individual 1V8 crown at the NCAA championships.
Socha was a member of the Second Varsity Eight in 2014. The crew became the first program since Brown (2003-04) and the third team overall to claim consecutive national titles in the 2V8 event when they won an NCAA title in June. The Second Varsity Eight also won its second-consecutive Big Ten title in 2014.
Former Buckeye Ilse Paulis will represent the Netherlands in Italy. Paulis, who lettered for Ohio State in 2012 and was a member of the First Varsity Eight, will row in the lightweight single. Paulis earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors in 2012 and was an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
Incoming freshman Laura Monteso Esmel will join Buckeye and Spain teammate Centelles when she rows in the double this week.
