COLUMBUS, Ohio–Thad Matta, Ohio State’s first-year head coach, has added guard Ron Lewis to the Buckeye men’s basketball roster. He is the first student-athlete to join the program under Matta’s direction.
Lewis, who played two years at Bowling Green, decided to transfer back to Columbus, where he starred locally at Brookhaven High School.
“Ron had a productive two years at the collegiate level,” Matta said. “He has a great feeling for Ohio State basketball and will give us a student-athlete with great energy and ability.”
A second-team All-Mid American Conference honoree as a sophomore, Lewis (6-4, 195) averaged 17 points and nearly 5.0 rebounds a game a year ago. He has demonstrated an ability to get to the foul line and convert. In just two seasons he shot 420 free throws, making 340 for a foul-shooting percentage of .810.
A starter in 55 of 60 games at Bowling Green, Lewis scored 877 points while averaging 82 assists and 30 steals per year. He made 191 of 233 free throws (.820) as a sophomore.
Lewis, who will major in sociology at Ohio State, will sit out the 2004-05 campaign to satisfy NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining, starting with the 2005-06 season.
