COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan, who will begin his junior season with the men’s tennis team this fall, was one of eight men’s players selected to compete in the US Open Wild Card Playoff the United States Tennis Association Player Development announced Monday. Taking place at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, the playoff will award the winner a US Open main draw singles wild card bid.
If Buchanan, a New Albany, Ohio, native, can emerge as the top player among the playoff contingent, he will compete in his third-consecutive US Open. Last summer, he earned a wild card spot after winning the USTA Boys’ 18’s National championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. In 2008, he played doubles with Ryan Harrison, also as a wild card entry.
The 2010 Big Ten Player of the Year and ITA Player to Watch, Buchanan earned the first of potentially many All-America honors (singles, doubles) this past season. Beginning the year ranked 103rd, he earned the No. 1 singles starting nod for the Buckeyes and climbed 97 spots to sixth in the nation at the conclusion of the season. Finishing the year 31-6, Buchanan was 24-2 at No. 1 singles, 25-2 in dual play and 20-6 against nationally-ranked opponents. He also went a perfect 10-0 in regular-season conference action. He entered the postseason as the seventh seed in the NCAA Singles championship.
