COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan, a member of the third-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. It is the fourth honor this season for Buchanan and 10th in his career.
This past weekend, the Buckeyes won their sixth-consecutive regular-season Big Ten title after recording a 10-0 mark in the conference. Ohio State, which has won the tournament title five consecutive times, will try to defend its success when it travels to Madison, Wis., for the Big Ten Tournament Thursday-Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
A junior from New Albany, Ohio, Buchanan won two singles matches and a pair of doubles matches en route to helping the Buckeyes clinch the league trophy.
Buchanan and teammate Shuhei Uzawa opened the weekend with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Indiana’s Josh MacTaggart and Stephen Vogl. Ranked 12th in the nation in singles, Buchanan then downed the Hoosiers’ Jeremy Langer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 to push the then-fourth-ranked Buckeyes to a 5-2 win over No. 24 Indiana. Buchanan and Blaz Rola, ranked 11th in the country, defeated Purdue’s Pawel Poziomski and Szymon Tatarczyk, 8-3, at No. 1 before Buchanan earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mark Kovacs at No. 2 singles in the Buckeyes’ 7-0 sweep of the 63rd-ranked Boilermakers.
Buchanan shares the April 26th award with Minnesota’s Tobias Wernet.
