COLUMBUS, Ohio – Francesca Di Lorenzo, a sophomore on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, defended her 2015 title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. In the final Sunday, Di Lorenzo defeated Hayley Carter of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-1, for her third overall ITA national title.
The titles for Di Lorenzo are the first in Ohio State women’s tennis history. She won both ITA national championships this fall, claiming the Riviera All-American crown in early October before capturing her second Indoor title in a row.

“It feels great and I’m not going to lie, it’s a little bit of a relief,” Di Lorenzo said to the ITA after her win. “Coming into this tournament I did feel some pressure, doing well last year. Coming here and being successful like I was last year is definitely exciting and I’m happy to be able to represent Ohio State here and do well and bring home a title for the university.”
The match was closer than it appears by the score alone, as Di Lorenzo captured seven games on no-ad points.
“I just played consistent and deep on those points, looking for opportunities when I had them and made smart choices on big points, and I think that was key,” Di Lorenzo said. “I think there were six deuces and I got all of them. The match was a lot closer than the score says it was, but I was definitely happy to pull through on those points.”
Di Lorenzo, the top seed in the tournament, began the season ranked third in the ITA rankings, while Carter was the top ranked player at the start of the year and the tourney’s No. 4 seed. The Buckeye posted a win over Carter in the semifinals of the All-American championships this fall and in the Round of 16 at the 2015 National Indoor Championships.
In the 2016 Indoors final, Di Lorenzo won the first set, 6-1, claiming the first four games before Carter held for 4-1. In the set, Di Lorenzo won five games on the no-ad point, including in the seventh game to break and win the set. In the second set, the players exchanged holds in the first three games before Di Lorenzo broke on the no-ad point for a 3-1 lead and then held, again winning on the no-ad, for a 4-1 advantage. Di Lorenzo broke to pull ahead 5-1 and then served out the match.
The championship earns Di Lorenzo a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament and a place on the 2017 USTA Collegiate National Team.
Di Lorenzo dropped just one set in the tournament as she posted four straight set victories and prevailed in three sets in the quarterfinals (6-2, 5-7, 6-1). In the four sweeps combined, she dropped just 11 total games.
Buckeyes were also in action Sunday at the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Florida. Senior Ferny Angeles Paz beat Peggy Porter of Florida, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Olivia Sneed lost to Marina Espana of East Tennessee, 6-4, 6-3.
