COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tiffany Cameron tallied a hat trick to lead the Scarlet team to a 4-2 win in the annual Scarlet and Gray scrimmage held Thursday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario tied the game and scored the go-ahead tally just minutes apart in the last of three 25-minute periods.

“It is fun to be back together and today gave us a good preview of what we have and what we need to work on,” head coach Lori Walker said. “There is a buzz and very good energy for us to build on. Today we saw that we have a lot of quality depth and versatility on every line.

Sophomore Lauren Amyx gave the Gray squad a 1-0 lead after senior Lauren Beachy played a beautiful through-ball from just inside midfield. Just minutes later, Beachy had another nice touch to a streaking Caitlyn Martin but the strike from the junior forward drifted wide left.

Cameron answered back for Scarlet when she gathered in a loose ball inside the box after fellow sophomore Lauren Granberg bulled through a pair of defenders to create the chance.

Gray came back in the second period to take a 2-1 lead when Martin scored the go-ahead goal on a header off a perfect cross from junior Paige Maxwell.

However, the third period belonged to the Scarlet team. Cameron scored the equalizer, burying a shot far post from just inside the box after a nice ball from sophomore Karin Sendel. The 2009 member of the Big Ten All-Freshman team then scored her third goal minutes later to give Scarlet the lead for good. Cameron controlled a beautiful long ball from freshman Maria Deliberato just inside the box and finished far post for a goal that was almost an exact replica of her previous tally.

Junior Liz Sullivan put the finishing touches on the victory for Scarlet, lofting a ball over the head of Gray goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner for the final goal in the 4-2 win.

A couple thoughts:

– Cameron and Martin were putting constant pressure on the defense all day and, much like last year, Beachy provided quite a spark when moved up from the back line.
– Lost in all of the offense were solid defensive efforts from Sullivan, senior co-captain Cassie Dickerson and sophomore Aly Walker.
– Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Middleman made an excellent diving save to her right on a header from Beachy.
– It was good to see the freshmen get their first taste of college soccer.

The Buckeyes continue two-a-days for the next week and take on Kentucky in a 6 p.m. scrimmage at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Aug. 14.
