COLUMBUS, Ohio – Redshirt sophomore Cody Burcher has earned an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships and will make it nine Buckeyes that are headed to St. Louis March 16-18.
Burcher, a 165-pounder, won 17 matches this season while facing a schedule that included 10 ranked opponents. At the Big Ten Championships last weekend, he won two bouts in the wrestleback rounds, including a 6-1 decision against Iowa’s Joey Gunter, the No. 5 seed. In his second year as a statrter, Bucher has 40 career wins.
Burcher’s selection comes after eight Buckeyes automatically qualified at the Big Ten Championships last weekend in Bloomington. That include conference champions Kyle Snyder, Kollin Moore, Bo Jordan and Nathan Tomasello. True freshman Luke Pletcher (fourth, 141 lbs.), redshirt sophomore Micah Jordan (second, 149 lbs.) and sophomore Myles Martin (second, 184 lbs.) also qualified. Behind that effort, Ohio State won the conference championship for the second time in three years with a school-record 139.5 points, distancing itself from second place Penn State (130 points) and third place Iowa (112 points).
The 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships commence March 16 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Tomorrow, the NCAA will announce matchups and seeds for all 10 weight classes.
