Tonight at 6pm ET, the Big Ten Network will rewind to 2007 for the unforgettable Sweet 16 battle between Ohio State and Tennessee. The Buckeyes trailed by 17 at the half before mounting, what was at the time, the biggest comeback in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

Minnesota’s Tubby Smith to Join ‘Big Ten Basketball and Beyond’

Big Ten Basketball and Beyond: Tournament Edition welcomes Minnesota coach Tubby Smith to its Chicago set for two nights to help preview NCAA Sweet 16 matchups. At 8 PM ET tonight, Smith will help break down the Big Ten’s chances in the regional semifinals along with Rick Pizzo, Mike Hall and Jim Crews. Immediately following the end of the Wisconsin-Butler game Thursday night, Smith will join with Pizzo, Dave Revsine and Jim Jackson on the show.

In addition, Big Ten Basketball and Beyond will air immediately following the final NCAA Tournament games this Friday through Sunday. The show airs every night of the week leading up to the Final Four and features on-site interviews with Big Ten players and coaches, game previews, highlights, analysis and a bracket review.

The top-seeded Buckeyes face No. 4 Kentucky in the East Regional Semifinal at 9:45 PM ET on Friday, while the Badgers will vie for a spot in the Southeast final when they take on the Bulldogs at 9:57 PM ET on Thursday. Pre-game press conferences for Wisconsin and Ohio State also will air at 8:30 PM ET on Wednesday and 6 PM ET on Thursday, respectively. In addition, the network will air post-game Tournament press conferences live Thursday and Friday following the network’s airing of Big Ten Basketball and Beyond.

The Big Ten is second among all conferences with two teams still dancing, trailing only the ACC, with three teams advancing to the Round of 16.

On the women’s side, the fourth-seeded Buckeyes punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women’s Tournament with Monday’s 67-60 win over Georgia Tech. Ohio State faces top-seeded Tennessee at noon ET Saturday in the Dayton Regional Semifinals. Ohio State is one of only four schools to see both men’s and women’s teams advance to the Sweet 16, joining Connecticut, Duke and North Carolina.

Finally, in the NIT, Northwestern claimed an 85-67 victory at Boston College on Saturday to keep their postseason streak alive. The fourth-seeded Wildcats will meet No. 2 Washington State tonight in the quarterfinals with a trip to Madison Square Garden and the NIT semifinals on the line. Tip-off is slated for 11 PM ET.

‘The Journey’ Nominated for a Sports Emmy

The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2010 has been nominated for a Sports Emmy in the category of Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthology, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced Tuesday.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the Big Ten Network and it’s an honor to be in such outstanding company,” President Mark Silverman said. “The nomination is a great tribute to the phenomenal work of our in-house production team and the great access to student-athletes and coaches that our Big Ten universities provided our team.”

Winners will be announced at the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy Award Ceremony on May 2 in New York City. Fans can watch the entire 2010 season of The Journey on Hulu.

Men’s Ice Hockey to be Proposed as Official Big Ten Sport in 2013-14

Athletic directors from Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin unanimously announced their intention to recommend to the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors in June that men’s ice hockey becomes an official conference sport for the 2013-14 academic year.

The recommendation includes both establishing the inaugural Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament in March 2014, with the winner earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, and a 20-game conference schedule with each team playing the other five schools four times (two home games and two away games). In addition, the Big Ten’s men’s ice hockey programs will continue to proactively work to maintain a strong schedule of non-conference competition with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).
