COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Synchronized swimming team won its fifth-straight event this season by topping Wheaton, Boston and Smith College on Saturday afternoon in Boston.
The Buckeyes scored 101 points, besting Wheaton with 80, Boston with 74 and Smith with 18.5.
In the solo event, Emma Baranski and Wenjing Deng took first and second with scores of 85.1000 and 82.6000, respectively. Lorraine Hack and Alyssa Hoying posted their best score of the season, an 85.5500 to win the duet. Natalie Huibregtse and Jasmine Pulido competed for the first time together this season and posted a 77.3750 to finish second.
The Buckeyes also took first and second in the trio as Hack, Hoying and Morgan Boneberg posted a score of 80.4750 while Baranski, Elizabeth Davidson and Monica Velazquez-Stiak scored a 79.6250. The Scarlet Team of Boneberg, Davidson, Deng, Hack, Hoying, Velazquez-Stiak, Noelle St. John and Stephanie Thielemann capped the event with a victory, totaling an 85.1250.
In the technical competition, Velazquez-Stiak took first in the A Figures with an 80.9479. Hoying and Deng finished closely behind Velazquez-Stiak. Thielemann followed up win in the B Figures last weekend with another this weekend, posting a 72.0303. Huibregtse finished second at 69.0425.
This was the final tune-up for the Buckeyes as they will head to the North Regional Championships next weekend in Fort Collins, Colo. The North Regional was the only event Ohio State failed to win last year. The two-day event begins next Saturday, Feb. 27.
