COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (19-7overall, 7-6 Big Ten), behind a match-high 18 points from Katie Dull won a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) victory at Michigan State (11-13, 3-10) Friday night in Jenison Field House. She posted a match-high 16 kills while hitting .696 and added two solo blocks. OSU’s Emily Danks added 15 points with 11 kills, one ace serve, a solo block and four assist blocks. Michigan State’s Jenilee Rathje recorded a team-high 13.5 points with 12 kills, one ace serve and one assist block.
With the first set tied at one, a kill from Danks and a Kelli Barhorst solo block made it 3-1, OSU. At 12-9, a Kelsey Kuipers kill and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to one at 12-11. Kills from Anna Szerszen and Danks and an ace serve from Danks opened a 15-11 lead. A Megan Schatzle kill stopped the run at 15-12. Kills from Szerszen and Barhorst and a MSU error made it 18-12. An OSU error and a Barhorst kill made it 19-13. Schatzle and Danks, with kills, made it 20-14. A kill from Natalie Emro cut the lead to five at 20-15. OSU, with a kill from Danks, an MSU error and a Danks-Allie Schwarzwalder block gave OSU a 23-15 lead. A Kuipers kill and an ace serve from Schatzl cut the margin to 23-17. OSU reached set point with a Schwarzwalder solo block at 24-17. A Spartan error ended the set at 25-17 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .346 in the set to .057 for Michigan State.
Tied at three in the second set, a kill from Barhorst and a MSU error gave Ohio State a 5-3 lead. A Keuipers kill made it 5-4. A kill and solo block by Dull and a kill from Danks made it 8-4. At 12-8, two aces from Kristen Kelsay, a Jenilee-Keuipers block and an OSU error tied the set at 12. At 13-all, kills from Rathje and Becca Zlabis gave Michigan State a 15-13 lead. At 19-17, blocks from Danks and Schwarzwalder and Danks and Barhorst tied the set at 19. An OSU error and a kill from Szerszen made it 20-all. A MSU error and a Rathje kill made it 21-21. A Spartan error and a kill from Rathje tied the set at 22. A kill from Dull and a MSU error gave Ohio State set point at 24-23. The Spartans stopped the set point with an Alexis Mathews kill at 24-23. A MSU error ended the set at 25-23 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .206 for the set to .152 for Michigan State.
The Buckeyes opened set three with kills from Betsy Hone and Dull. A Schatzle kill made it 2-1. An MSU error, an awarded point and a Dull kill gave Ohio State a 5-1 lead. A Rathje kill, her ace serve and an OSU error cut the lead to 5-4. At 11-10, a Schatzle ace serve tied the set at 11. Two kills from Dull made it 13-11, OSU. At 14-12, a kill from Mathews and an Emro-Mathews block tied the set at 14. Tied at 16, an OSU error and a Schatzle-Mathews block gave MSU an 18-16 lead. At 19-17, OSU tied the set at 19 with kills from Danks and Dull. A Schatzle kill and a Schatzle-Kuipers block made it 21-19, MSU. Kills from Dull and Schatzle moved the score to 22-20 Spartans. A Michigan State error and a solo block from Danks tied the set at 22. A kill from Dull made it 23-22. OSU reached match point at 24-22 with a MSU error. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Dull, won the set, 25-22, to sweep the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .184 for the set to .207 for Michigan State.
Ohio State hit .235 in the match to .134 for Michigan State. The Buckeyes had a 40-33 advantage in kills and a 39-32 margin in assists. Buckeye Hone posted a match-high 36 assists in the match while MSU’s Kelsay recorded 15 and Emro had nine. The Spartans held a six-two edge in ace serves with Kelsay recording a match-high three. Michigan State gave up 10 service errors to four for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 40-36 margin in digs. OSU’s Sarah Mignin recorded a match-high 13 digs in the match with MSU’s Carli Weiler posting 12. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10-8 advantage in team blocks. Sharing match-high honors for Ohio State were Danks and Schwarzwalder with each collecting a solo and four assist blocks.
Ohio State continues the road trip with a 6 p.m. match Saturday at 15th-ranked Michigan (20-5, 9-4). The match will be carried live by the Big Ten Network.
