COLUMBUS, Ohio – With gold-medal winning performances in the solo and trio routines, the Ohio State synchronized swimming team won its 27th U.S. Collegiate championship Saturday at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
“It was a squeaker,” Linda Lichter-Witter, who won her 10th title in 15 seasons as head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “It was a great Buckeye day. We went in defending champions and after two days of competing, we were the underdogs. After graduating eight seniors we pulled it out. The Buckeyes rocked today and this was quite a championship in front of great Buckeye support.
Ohio State edged Stanford by three points, 93-90, to claim its third-consecutive collegiate crown. Incarnate Word finished third with 75 points.
Freshman Yuliya Maryanko once again impressed the judges with her solo routine, scoring a 91.625. It was a close event, though, with Incarnate Word’s Saki Fujise finishing second with a 91.375.
In the trio, the Buckeyes finished first and third, respectively, paced by Alex Beckett, Deborah Shim and Michelle Theriault’s 90.500. In third place was the group of Lauren Nicholson, Paige Ramsey and Lauren Robinson, who earned an 89.750. In all, the Buckeyes have captured 26 trio titles and their third consecutive.
The tandem of Maryanko and Theriault were second in the duet, scoring a 91.250, .375 points behind winner Maria Koroleva and Olivia Morgan of Stanford (91.625).
Finally, in the team routine, usually the most anticipated event of the sport, concluded the championships and Ohio State’s Scarlet and Gray teams finished second and fifth, respectively. The Scarlet team of Chelsea Aton, Beckett, Colleen Courtmanche, Nicholson, Ramsey, Robinson, Shim, Theriault recorded a 92.875. Team Gray (Raquel Aguado, Kayley Colville, Monica Finnigan, Caitlin Hoffman, Katie LaBounty, Jenny Mann, Liana Litsky, Lara Tutton) posted an 89.875.
In conjunction with Ohio State Recreational Sports, the Buckeyes will host the 2011 U.S. Senior National Championships April 14th-16th. The Buckeyes and McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion are no strangers to hosting premier synchronized swimming championships as they hosted the U.S. Collegiate National championships in 2008, 2000, 1990, 1987 and 1982.
