COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team came from behind to beat No. 15-ranked Illinois, 4-3, Friday at the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Courts. The Buckeyes trailed 2-0 and 3-2, but singles wins by Shiori Fukuda, Olivia Sneed and Danielle Wolf in straight sets, along with Anna Sanford clinching the match with a three-set victory, led to the team defeat of the Illini.
The No. 31 Buckeyes are now 13-6 on the year and 7-3 in Big Ten play. The Illini drop to 19-4 and are 7-3 in league action.
The Buckeyes remain at home to host No. 12 Northwestern in the final match of the regular season. The match begins at noon Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts and admission is free. Buckeye seniors Sanford and Sneed will be recognized before the match as part of Senior Day.
The Buckeyes dropped the doubles point for just the fourth time this season, but notched their first victory when falling behind 1-0.
Ohio State won the first doubles match. In a matchup of ranked teams, No. 39 Anna Sanford and Shiori Fukuda of Ohio State topped No. 48 Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya, 6-2. The Buckeye tandem is 13-2 this spring.
Illinois won the remaining doubles matches for the doubles point. On court two, Jaclyn Switkes and Emilee Duong defeated Olivia Sneed and Mary Beth Hurley, 6-3, and on court three Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz won 6-2 over Emma DeCoste and Maria Tyrina.
Buckeye Mary Beth Hurley fell in straight sets to Emilee Duong, 6-1, 6-1, on court six, putting Illinois up 2-0.
Ohio State won the next two matches to tie the score at two. Shiori Fukuda put the Buckeyes on the board with a straight sets takedown of Kawai, 6-3, 6-0. Within a minute, Olivia Sneed wrapped up her match on court three, as she dropped just four games in a win over Daniela Novak, 6-1, 6-3.
Illinois pushed ahead (3-2) when Mia Rabinowitz topped Emma DeCoste, 6-4, 6-1, on court four.
On court five, Danielle Wolf prevailed for the Buckeyes to again tie the team score. She won the first set in a tiebreaker. In the second, Wolf dropped just one game, for a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Sasha Belaya.
With the team match tied at three, it came down to court one. Facing No. 97 Jaclyn Switkes, No. 56 Anna Sanford claimed the first set, 6-3. The second set was a back and forth battle that resulted in favor of the Illini, 7-5, sending it to a third set. Sanford broke to open the set and then held. Switkes served out the next game for 2-1. Sanford did not drop another game, closing out the match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, for the team victory.
Fukuda, Sanford and Sneed are all 8-2 in Big Ten matches this season. Sanford is 14-4 in dual play, with Fukuda 13-3, Sneed 13-5 and Wolf 11-6. Sneed is on a team-high six-match unbeaten streak.
