COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team teed off at the first round of the 2011 Men’s Golf Championship in Stillwater, Okla., Tuesday, ending the opening day in a fifth-place tie. The Buckeyes’ team score of 291 (+3) came on the par 72, 7,407-yard Karsten Creek golf course.

“I think the big thing was we were just patient out there today,” Donnie Darr, head men’s golf coach, said. “We had a few guys hang in there and make some birdies at the end of the round, but all in all, it was a pretty solid day.”

The Ohio State lineup was led by Bo Hoag in a ninth-place tie. The senior went back and forth between bogeys and birdies through much of the day, but ultimately notched five birdies to four bogeys to finish with a 1-under 71.

Brad Smith had a round similar to Hoag’s, firing an even-par 72 for the Scarlet and Gray. Smith also mixed bogeys and birdies with five apiece to close out in a tie for 19th place.

Michael Cress was just off his teammates’ pace, posting a 2-over 74 on the day. The senior was struggling towards the end of the round, but two birdies in the final three holes put Cress in a tie for 47th place with teammate Alex Redfield. Redfield, a junior, played on an even keel through most of the round, tallying 13 pars. Junior Dan Charen also played for Ohio State, carding a 90 to finish in a tie for 154th place.

Round two of the NCAA Championships takes place Wednesday with the Buckeyes teeing off at 1:10 p.m. from 10th tee.
