Ohio State climbs 13 places during tournament; freshman Brad Smith ties for fifth as three OSU golfers place in Top 20
 
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team began the Ron Moore Invitational in 15th place after the opening round, but battled the following two days to finish second at the tournament Sunday with a total of 17-under 847, just two strokes back from winner Kansas State. The Buckeyes led the field the final day with a team score of 278 (-10) after carding 277 during the second round Saturday on the par 72, 7,015-yard Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.

Four Ohio State golfers shot final rounds under par as three finished in the Top 20 of the field. Freshman Brad Smith led the Buckeyes in a tie for fifth-place at 7-under 209. The Peru, Ind., native carded a third round of 70 to add to his earlier rounds of 73-66, a career low, en route to his career-high placement. It is the sixth Top 10 finish for a Buckeye this season. Smith led the field in par 5 scoring at 11-under for the event and the Buckeyes topped par 5 scoring as a team with an outstanding 27-under on those holes.

Leading Ohio State in scoring during the final 18 holes was senior Kyle Coconis with his second-consecutive round of 68. The co-captain from Zanesville, Ohio, tied his career low again and has shot five rounds in the 60s this season. He came back from an opening round of 75 to tie for 11th at 211 (-5).

Tying for 20th was sophomore Patrick Simard, who also shot in the 60s during the third round at 3-under 69. Combined with his previous rounds of 73-72, the native of Marbella, Spain completed the tournament with a total of 214.

Senior co-captain Zach Sebert also was under par for the final 18 holes with a 71 after shooting 73 during the first two rounds. The Grove City, Ohio, native finished just 1-over with a total of 217 to tie for 34th place. Freshman Bo Hoag, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, wrapped up the event with a 76 to tie for 44th at 220.

In the individual competition, junior Dan Rush tied for first in the field of 17 with a score of 2-under 214. Rush, from Avon Lake, Ohio, tied with Daniel Wood of Kansas State with rounds of 71-68-75. Also competing for the Buckeyes were junior Kevin Grabeman (10th, 222) and freshman Tanner Murphy (11th, 223).

Up next, the Buckeyes travel to Greenville, S.C., to compete in the Furman Intercollegiate, March 28-30.
