EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 22 Ohio State dropped a 10-2 decision in six innings to Northwestern on Friday afternoon at Drysdale Field. The Buckeyes are 26-9 overall and 7-5 in Big Ten play while the Wildcats move to 24-13 with a 7-5 mark in the conference.
Ashley Goodwin led the team with two hits, followed by Emily Clark, Bailee Sturgeon and Shelby McCombs with one hit apiece.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a fielding error. They tacked on another run in the following inning thanks to a solo home run by Morgan Nelson.
Ohio State clapped back in the top of the fourth. Goodwin singled to right field before McCombs blasted a two-shot homer over left field to tie the game at 2-2.
Northwestern regained the lead for good in the fifth on back-to-back home runs from Rachel Lewis and Nelson. The home team added five runs in the sixth for the final tally on a pair of bases-loaded walks, a throwing error and two-RBI single.
The Buckeyes had a chance to add runs to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth after they stacked the bags on two walks and a single but the Wildcats were able to neutralize the threat with a groundout.
McCombs (11-3) was tagged with the loss after 4.1 innings of seven-hit, five-run (four earned), one-strikeout ball. Katya Duvall pitched one inning of relief in which she allowed three runs on one hit with a strikeout. Morgan Ray faced two batters in the bottom of the sixth.
Sturgeon extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a single while Lilli Piper has reached base in 10 consecutive outings.
Ohio State and Northwestern are scheduled to face off tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET.
