VERONA, Wis. – The Ohio State women’s golf team sits eighth after a 5-over par 293 in the opening round of NCAA Regional play Monday at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis. The Buckeyes sits one stroke back over seventh-place Illinois and three behind sixth-place Wisconsin. The top six teams and top three individuals on non-advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Championships May 18-23 in Stillwater, Okla.
The Buckeyes teed off on the 10th hole at University Ridge and Big Ten Championships medalist Jaclyn Lee got off to a blistering start, going 4-under through her first seven holes. However, the junior bogeyed 18th and fifth around a double-bogey on the fourth before notching a birdie on the par-4 seventh en route to an opening-round 1-under 71 and a tie for 13th. Sophomore Alex Wright was the next-best Buckeyes competitor, notching four birdies to card a 1-over 73, sitting in a tie for 26th place.
Sophomore Adeena Shears tallied a pair of birdies and is in a tie for 43rd at 2-over while junior Niki Schroeder and senior Rio Watanabe are tied for 52nd after they each posted a 3-over 75.
As a team, Ohio State tied for fourth in par-3 scoring at 5-over on the day while recording 55 pars, the fifth-most in the field. Watanabe tied for fifth in par-3 scoring at even-par while Jaclyn Lee tied for the third-most birdies with six on the day.
