COLUMBUS, Ohio – The wins kept coming on Saturday night for Ohio State thanks to the women’s volleyball team getting a victory in straight sets (25-17, 30-28, 25-21) over Indiana in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes are 12-11 overall and 5-7 in Big Ten action while Indiana drops to 12-11 and 1-10 in conference play.
For the second time this weekend, Luisa Schirmer paced the offense as she delivered a match-best 15 kills. She capped off her double-double with 10 digs. Ashley Wenz chipped in 11 kills and five blocks. Ana Beatriz Franklin connected on 8-of-15 error-free swings for a career-high .533 attacking percentage. Madison Smeathers also did well on the night with a .400 clip (8-2-15). Taylor Hughes added a match-high 43 assists and Lauren Witte had six kills and five blocks. Hannah Gruensfelder, Hughes and Franklin dug eight balls each.
SET 1: Ohio State had five players hit over .300 to open the match. The set was close until the Buckeyes used an 8-0 run to jump ahead, 17-8. The Hoosiers tried to regain some ground but a kill by Wenz put the set away, 25-17.
SET 2: After trailing by as many as six, the Scarlet & Gray went on a 5-2 sprint to lock the score at 25-all. Ohio State and Indiana traded the next six points. It looked like the set would go to the Hoosiers but a successful challenge by OSU tied things at 28-28. An attack error and Wenz kill gave the Buckeyes the extended rally, 30-28.
SET 3: The offense was impressive in the third as the Buckeyes earned a .421 hitting percentage (20-4-38). Franklin tallied six kills while Schirmer and Smeathers had five apiece. Four straight Ohio State points reduced the deficit to one, 12-11, as Indiana called for time. Out of the break, the teams went point-for-point until the Buckeyes took a slight 20-17 advantage. OSU continued to push to secure a 25-21 triumph.
Ohio State hits the road for a pair of big time matches against Wisconsin (Nov. 3) and Minnesota (Nov. 4) next weekend.
