COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team has been ranked seventh in the first American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Men’s Coaches Top 15 Poll. The Buckeyes moved up from10th in the final poll of 2010. OSU received 136 points in the poll and is the highest ranked team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Three other MIVA teams are ranked with Loyola-Chicago at 13th, Lewis at 14th and Ball State 15th. Southern California is ranked first in the poll followed by UC Irvine, Pepperdine, Stanford, Brigham Young, Hawaii and Ohio State.

The Buckeyes were last ranked seventh in the final poll of 2008 and have not been ranked this high in the opening poll since 2000 when they began the season tied for sixth. OSU will face seven of the 15 ranked teams in the poll, playing 13 matches against those teams.

Ohio State has won four consecutive regular season MIVA championships and the last three MIVA tournament championships. The Buckeyes were 22-8 overall last season and won the MIVA regular season championship with an 11-1 mark. OSU won the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championship semifinals where it lost to eventual national champion Stanford, 3-0.

OSU opens the 2011 season with matches at No. 3 Pepperdine at 5 p.m. PT Sunday and at 7 p.m. PT Monday. The Buckeyes will open the home schedule at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 against St. Francis in St. John Arena.
