Maria Briones leads squad with 14 points, Ally Tunitis backstops Ohio State to undefeated record

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team has had a successful spring season, recording a 5-0-1 ledger in the Longstreth Midwest Spring League and will play Kent State for the title at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kent, Ohio.

The Midwest Spring League has pitted top teams from the Big Ten and Mid American Conferences in a round robin championship format with Ohio State owning the best record after three rounds of play.

The Buckeyes started the season with three wins over Miami (4-1), Ohio (2-1) and Indiana (2-1) April 3 in Oxford, Ohio. The team continued its winning ways, downing Kent State (1-0) and Central Michigan (4-0) before tying Michigan in a scoreless contest April 10 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Rising junior Maria Briones leads the team with 14 points on five goals and four assists, scoring the gamewinning goals vs. Indiana, Kent State and Central Michigan while supplying assists on gamewinners vs. Miami and Ohio.

Berta Queralt, a 2009 All-American and Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is second on the team with nine points (3g, 3a). In all, seven Buckeyes have combined for 24 goals and 11 assists for 35 points.

Rising junior Ally Tunitis has been manning the goal for Ohio State, recording 14 saves in six games, including a season-high four saves against Michigan. In addition, classmate Jenn Sciulli has continued to lead the backfield, posting a critical defensive save against Ohio.

After the league title game Saturday, the Buckeyes will play Central Michigan in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. in Kent, Ohio. The Scarlet and Gray will conclude their spring schedule with a contest vs. Ball State at 1 p.m. April 25 in Muncie, Ind., before ending the season with a scrimmage at Kent State April 29.
