ORLANDO — The Ohio State University cheerleading squad took fifth place Sunday night at the 2010 UCA College Cheerleading National Championships at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
The fifth-place finish is a one-spot improvement from last year’s sixth place finish and marks the highest since the squad took second in 2001. And once again, the Buckeyes placed higher than any other Big Ten school.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Lenee Buchman, assistant coach Dana Bumbrey and choreographer Eddie Hollins, the 2010 squad consisted of Ben Schmidt, Gordon Rankin, AJ Blankenship, Nate Wise, Joshua Springer, Austin Wolfe, Ian Henschen, Jamal Niles, Allan Ray, Allison Humbert, Ally Taulbee, Tara Warrens, Brooke Shearer, Cassie Bernard, Brittany Maynard and Cassie Benfield. The alternates were Anthony Perez, Samuel Desalvatore, Kennah Mason and Nina Piergallini.
The Buckeyes won the national championship in 1993 and took sixth in 2000, 2005 and 2009.
For the second straight year, the University of Kentucky finished first, followed by Alabama and Central Florida.
