COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State defeated Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the first exhibition match of the preseason.

After the Buckeyes controlled possession for the majority of the first 20 minutes, Chris Hegngi scored on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the box by an MVNU defender to give Ohio State the 1-0 advantage.

Ohio State then added to the lead in the 32nd minute co-captain Sam Scales scored from 15 yards out off a nice feed from freshman Omar Vallejo.

Things stayed quiet until the Cougars cut the lead in half in the 80th minute when Chris Allen scored off a nice cross from Kemar Jackson.

For the game, Ohio State outshot the Cougars 13-4 and 4-1 on goal.

The Buckeyes host Cleveland State in their second exhibition of the preseason at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
