Oxford, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team was downed by No. 1/2-ranked Miami in the Central Colelgiate Hockey Association tournament quarterfinal best-of-three series opener, 6-2, Friday in Steve Cady Arena. The No. 8 seed Buckeyes and No. 1 seed RedHawks will meet in game two at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, with Ohio State looking to even the series.
Ohio State held a 2-1 lead after the first on two Hunter Bishop goals. Miami’s Andy Miele opened the scoring at 11:32, scoring from in close. The Buckeyes tied it just 46 seconds later. John Albert threw the puck at the net and it went off Bishop, who was driving to the net, and slowly crossed the line. C.J. Severyn had the second assist on the goal. At 18:28 Ohio State took the lead as Bishop scored on a wrist shot from the faceoff circle, getting to a loose puck. Defensemen Chris Reed and Shane Sims assisted on the goal, Bishop’s fifth in two games after a hat trick last Saturday. Shots were 15-11 in favor of the RedHawks in the stanza, and just two coincidental penalties were called.
Miami scored four goals in the second to take a 5-2 lead through two periods. The RedHawks tied the game just 17 seconds into the stanza on Carter Camper’s goal and he put the Buckeyes ahead 3-2 at 6:8 with a power-play goal. Jarod Palmer extended the lead to 4-2 with a 4-on-4 score at 14:04 and Miele added a fifth goal at 16:28 on the power play. Miami outshot the Buckeyes, 14-12, in the period. The teams combined for 11 penalties in the stanza. Ohio State was 2-for-4 on the power play, with Miami 2-for-4, including a goal on a major power play.
The only goal in the third came with less than three minutes remaining when Alden Hirschfeld scored at 17:12 just three seconds after a RedHawk power play ended. Ohio State was 0-for-3 on the power play in the stanza, including a 5-on-3 advantage to close out the game. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 13-5.
Buckeye junior goalie Dustin Carlson started the game and played 36:23, suffering the loss while allowing five goals and making 22 saves. Cal Heeter played 23:32 and had 14 stops on 15 shots. Miami outshot Ohio State, 42-28. Miami goalie Cody Reichard had 26 saves in all 60 minutes.
The Buckeyes were scoreless on seven power-play chances, with Miami 2-for-6.
